Firmenprofil / Information about my ”firm“

Ich möchte mich kurz vorstellen: Mein Name ist Friedrich Giesler. Ich bin Herausgeber flacher 30mm-Zinnfiguren, kein kommerzieller Hersteller (der „Firmenname“ ist eine bloße Spielerei). Ich mache meine Zinnfiguren “aus Spaß an der Freud” (wie man hier in Bonn sagt) und gebe sie auch an andere (zum Selbstkostenpreis) ab. Manche Figuren habe ich selbst gezeichnet, manche auch selbst graviert, andere von Fachleuten (Lecke, Sonntag, Windisch-Sachs) gravieren lassen. Neuerscheinungen sind mit markiert. Mit Zinnfiguren, d.h. den etwa 30 mm hohen flachen Relieffiguren, beschäftige ich mich seit meiner Kindheit, als ich 1940 einige von meinem Vater erbte. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sich mein Interesse hauptsächlich auf die römische Antike konzentriert. Mein Hauptinteresse gilt dabei der Darstellung des Lebens in der römischen Provinz. Im Laufe der Jahre habe ich viel selbst recherchiert, und bin stolz darauf, im Zweifelsfall den Fachleuten über römisches Zivilleben und Militär Fragen stellen zu können, auf die sie auch keine Antwort wissen - oder nur nach scharfem Nachdenken. Viele Informationen habe ich in Aufsätzen zusammengefasst. Ich gebe aber auch gerne mein Wissen weiter. Wenn Sie Fragen haben: Mailen Sie mich einfach an: F.Giesler-@t-online.de. In den letzten Jahren habe ich angefangen, mich mit der Darstellung der Varus-Katastrophe des Jahres 9 n.Chr. in Zinnfiguren zu befassen. Die Zeichnungen für Figuren der beteiligten Römer und Cherusker & Co. sind schon größtenteils fertig, die ersten Figuren auch schon graviert. Mal sehen, wie lange es Augen und Hände und Gesundheit noch mitmachen und was davon Wirklichkeit werden wird. Mit meinem Freund Gerald Nadebor (der mein Sohn sein könnte) habe ich ein „Joint Venture“ der gemeinsamen Herausgabe von Zinnfiguren begonnen. (Siehe dazu unter „Mein Partner“.) Mein neuestes Interessengebiet ist das Marinekorps Flandern 1914-18. Wie es dazu kam, ist eine seltsame Geschichte. Eine Rolle gespielt hat sicher auch meine Geburtsstadt: Wilhelmshaven.

May I introduce myself: My name is Friedrich Giesler. I am a private producer of 30 mm flats, not a professional producer (that my “firm” has got a proper name is a kind of child’s play). I make or have my figures made just for fun. I also sell them to others. The prices are calculated just to match the costs. I don’t make a living by it. For some of my flats I have made the drawings, others I have engraved myself, others were made by expert artists and engravers (Lecke, Sonntag, Windisch-Sachs) I can read and write English (and answer the telephone, too). The newest flats of mine are marked . I started to collect and enjoy the tiny flat 30 mm figures when I was a boy and “inherited” some of my father’s flats in 1940. In the course of time my interest has mainly shifted towards Roman antiquity. I am mostly interested in reconstructing scenes of daily life in the north-western provinces of the Roman empire. During the last 30 years I have done some “research work“ in this field, and I am proud sometimes to be able to put questions to expert scholars about Roman civil and military life that they cannot answer themselves – or only after some hard thinking. Most of my collected knowledge I have written down in papers and articles for collectors’ magazines. But I also like to hand on my bits of information to those who are interested. In the last years I have begun drawing figures for the representation of the military catastrophe of governor Varus and his three legions in 9 AD (the first figures have just been finished). Another interest is making figures for Imperial wine production on the Mosella in the 4^th century. Together with my friend Gerald Nadebor – who could be my son I have undertaken a “Joint Venture“ of co-producing flats: (You will find an extra page in German under “My partner”.) My newest spleen is Marinekorps Flandern in 1914/18. How I came to take an interest in this topic is a rather lengthy story. Part of it certainly is that I was born in Wilhelmshaven, my birthplace once having been an important port of the German Navy.

Mit “Offizin” bezeichnet man gewöhnlich eine Zinngießerwerkstatt bzw. eine Firma, die Zinngusswaren, u.a. Zinnfiguren, herstellt und vertreibt. Eine “Privatoffizin” ist eigentlich keine Firma, d.h. kein kommerzielles Unternehmen. Meist handelt es sich, wie in meinem Fall, um eine Privatperson, die Zinnfiguren herstellt und herausgibt. Die Herstellung von Finnfiguren ist sehr teuer, wenn man Gravurzeichnung und Gravur von Fachleuten ausführen lässt. Auch wenn man selber zeichnet und graviert (wie ich es zum Teil tue), entstehen Kosten für Formsteine und Gussmaterial, ganz abgesehen von den hohen Investitionskosten für Werkzeug und Schmelzofen. Ein kleiner Privathersteller wie ich kann diese Kosten nie hereinbekommen. Sie müssen unter “Hobby” abgebucht werden. Die Preise, die ich bei Abgabe von Figuren nehme, decken nur die direkten Unkosten.

My “firm” is not a proper enterprise. I just like to make or edit flats and share them with people interested in the products of my imagination. Making flats is a costly hobby, especially if you have your drawings and casts made by artists and artisans. But even if you execute the drawing and the engraving of the moulds and the casting of the figures yourself (as I mostly do now) – there are costs for stones and casting metal, not to speak of the prices for tools and equipment. As a private producer you will never make a profit, it is just spending money for your hobby. The prices I charge for my figures will at best cover the direct costs for producing the figure, i.e. casting it.
